Death Driven Rider
A downloadable game
We made this in a four-day game jam. We had five designers/3D artists and two programmers including me. The theme was "Power".
We decided on a retro twin-stick, arcade-style game. We made a pixel shader to give it a retro feel. Instead of using one of the default UnrealEngine templates, we decided to make everything from scratch. This is because we felt that the car from the car template was over-complicated and the twin-stick ufo movement had no momentum or turning rate. This game was primarily developed using blueprints
The goal of our game is to stay alive as long as possible, whilst killing the aliens and travelling through the portals. Whilst the player drives, their power is slowly reducing, it also reduces when an enemy touches or shoots the player. The game ends when the power is completely depleted.
I worked on the enemy AI, enemy attack, player and enemy health, spawning the enemies, health and weapon pickups.
Unfortunately, we had a lot of issues during the game jam, with one person injured and two people unavailable for two days. Because of this, over scoping and a lack of time, we were not able to implement all of the features we had hoped to, such as a rotating turret, some assets, animations for the enemies, multiple types of weapons and pickups, a difficulty curve, where each level gets harder, special effects and a leaderboard. We were not able to test play the game to an adequate level, because of a lack of time. Therefore, there are quite a few bugs: Boosting when idle or through portals breaks the game. In some levels, the enemy AI doesn't respond to the player. Sometimes the car doesn't move when the game starts. Overall, we are happy with what we managed to produce in the four days, despite the hiccups.
We originally made this game to be played with an Xbox controller. I added keyboard mappings to the controls so that it can be played with a keyboard, however, it loses some of its functionality
Controls:
moving - WASD
Acceleration - Left-shift
shooting - left, up, down, right arrow keys
None of the assets belong to me. They belong to the designers that were on my team.
